Scarlett Lott is positive she didn't kill her corporate magnate uncle. The authorities, however, have irrefutable video evidence that she did. Unable to extract a confession and unimpressed with her denials, they ship her off to the Omniservatory, an asylum - sorry, rehabilitation facility - where "guests" are placed under constant surveillance and deviant behavior is corrected.

Locked up and off the grid, she has no way to verify if her uncle's even dead (he has faked his own death before), let alone try to clear her name. Luckily, Scarlett manages to snag a meeting with her best friend Rachel to enlist her help. Unfortunately, Rachel teams up with the guy who played a role in Scarlett's arrest. When the person she trusts most and the person she trusts least break her out of the Omniservatory, accidentally shooting a guard in the process, they all become fugitives.

Despite the temptation to just make a run for it, Scarlett feels obligated to stay for the people who are now part of her mess. Going through some of her uncle's hidden files, Scarlett discovers a birth certificate indicating that she isn't who she thinks she is. The only way to figure out her real identity is to break into his corporation's maximum security biotech lab. Scarlett has less than twenty-four hours to find out who wanted her uncle dead, why they would frame her for it, and who she really is, before the authorities catch her and erase any trace of her existence permanently.

Found my old Nintendo Game Boy Color and The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages the other day and thought I'd make a YouTube video unboxing them. What do you guys think?!

The cute blue packaging caught my eye at the store the other day so I went in for a closer look and then ended up picking one up. By the looks of it, Anatomicals is a skincare line with an edgy/slightly sardonic personality. (Their tagline is "we only want you for your body.")

This particular product is a hand cream, cheekily labeled "the cream of British society" with the subtitle "one's favourite hand cream" in a white tea scent. What's interesting is that this one appears to have been distributed by Australia (according to the back of the tube), was created in the UK, but made in the USA. Quite a globetrotter there!

The product description gave me a chuckle too: "the artistocracy aren't what they were. their fortunes have dwindled, and those who still have their stately piles (not as in the dreadful bottom condition caused by sitting on their thrones for too long) have had to resort to taking in paying guests - perish the thought. if there's one thing they've managed to hold onto, it's the fact that they can continue to afford this cream and don't have hands as dreadful as their former, now fired, servants." (Complete with lack of capitalization and all.)

The formula is paraben-free and the scent is fairly neutral, kind of like what you'd expect a hand cream to smell like. The lotion did feel a little like it was sitting on top of the skin rather than absorbing in, but it does make your hands feel soft and doesn't leave behind any stickiness or streaks on electronics' screens, so tally this one up in the 'win' column!deltayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09419573977053468767noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7376470744584275186.post-64858984488727048602014-06-26T22:01:00.002-04:002014-06-26T22:01:38.805-04:002013 Releases for the TBR List: Doubles/ParallelsWay belated post, but here's the fifth (and final planned) installment of the 2013 Releases for the TBR List series. Previous lists: contemporary, space, sci-fi, and dystopia.

Looking through the 2013 YA releases, I noticed that there were quite a few titles that deal with doubles (either in the form of clones, lookalikes, etc.) or parallel (i.e. also doubled) timelines (such as alternate universes/realities).
Addison Coleman’s life is one big “What if?” As a Searcher, whenever Addie is faced with a choice, she can look into the future and see both outcomes. It’s the ultimate insurance plan against disaster. Or so she thought. When Addie’s parents ambush her with the news of their divorce, she has to pick who she wants to live with—her father, who is leaving the paranormal compound to live among the “Norms,” or her mother, who is staying in the life Addie has always known. Addie loves her life just as it is, so her answer should be easy. One Search six weeks into the future proves it’s not.

In one potential future, Addie is adjusting to life outside the Compound as the new girl in a Norm high school where she meets Trevor, a cute, sensitive artist who understands her. In the other path, Addie is being pursued by the hottest guy in school—but she never wanted to be a quarterback’s girlfriend. When Addie’s father is asked to consult on a murder in the Compound, she’s unwittingly drawn into a dangerous game that threatens everything she holds dear. With love and loss in both lives, it all comes down to which reality she’s willing to live through . . . and who she can’t live without.

With the pressure building, all Caroline wants to do is escape--both her family and the reality of Gram's failing health. So when Caroline's best friend offers to take her to a party one fateful Friday night, she must choose: stay by Gram's side, or go to the party and live her life.

Abby Barnes had a plan. The Plan. She'd go to Northwestern, major in journalism, and land a job at a national newspaper, all before she turned twenty-two. But one tiny choice—taking a drama class her senior year of high school—changed all that. Now, on the eve of her eighteenth birthday, Abby is stuck on a Hollywood movie set, miles from where she wants to be, wishing she could rewind her life. The next morning, she's in a dorm room at Yale, with no memory of how she got there. Overnight, it's as if her past has been rewritten.

And not only that: Abby's life changes every time her parallel self makes a new choice. Meanwhile, her parallel is living out Abby's senior year of high school and falling for someone Abby's never even met.
Reboot - Amy Tintera

Five years ago, Wren Connolly was shot three times in the chest. After 178 minutes she came back as a Reboot: stronger, faster, able to heal, and less emotional. The longer Reboots are dead, the less human they are when they return. Wren 178 is the deadliest Reboot in the Republic of Texas. Now seventeen years old, she serves as a soldier for HARC (Human Advancement and Repopulation Corporation).

Wren’s favorite part of the job is training new Reboots, but her latest newbie is the worst she’s ever seen. As a 22, Callum Reyes is practically human. His reflexes are too slow, he’s always asking questions, and his ever-present smile is freaking her out. Yet there’s something about him she can’t ignore. When Callum refuses to follow an order, Wren is given one last chance to get him in line—or she’ll have to eliminate him. Wren has never disobeyed before and knows if she does, she’ll be eliminated, too. But she has also never felt as alive as she does around Callum.
The beings who only look human, who roam the countryside killing anyone they see. Who have scattered Earth’s last survivors. To stay alone is to stay alive, Cassie believes, until she meets Evan Walker. Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie’s only hope for rescuing her brother—or even saving herself. What Cassie doesn’t realize is that there’s more at risk than a few unsolved homicides— especially when she’s sent to live with a group of teens whose gifts are as unusual as her own.
Sarcastic, privileged Michael has a knack for reading emotions, which he uses to get inside Cassie’s head—and under her skin. Brooding Dean shares Cassie’s gift for profiling, but keeps her at arm’s length.
Soon, it becomes clear that no one in the Naturals program is what they seem. And when a new killer strikes, danger looms closer than Cassie could ever have imagined. Caught in a lethal game of cat and mouse with a killer, the Naturals are going to have to use all of their gifts just to survive.

Science fiction/dystopian novels set in space have been getting big recently. K.A. Applegate's Remnants series and Beth Revis' (interview) Across the Universe (review) (#2 on Top 10 of 2011 list) series quickly come to mind, obviously. But a number of others have also joined the fray in 2013:
Slightly funny side story: so I was going through old (like really old) messages on the Absolute Write forums the other day, and found some brief exchanges with Phoebe North from a few years ago, did a quick Google search, and realized that I'd actually seen her book, Starglass, at the grocery store over the summer, and remembered thinking that the synopsis sounded interesting. Small world, huh?

But by the looks of it, there have been some awesome releases in 2013, so over the next couple of days, I'm running a series of compilations of 2013 YA releases that look worthwhile to be added to the TBR list. Just a heads up, the books that'll be featured will either be standalones or the first in series. If you have any particular recommendations, drop a note in the comments section!
Okay, the whole world is a Simon Snow fan . . .

But for Cath, being a fan is her life — and she’s really good at it. She and her twin sister, Wren, ensconced themselves in the Simon Snow series when they were just kids; it’s what got them through their mother leaving.

Reading. Rereading. Hanging out in Simon Snow forums, writing Simon Snow fan fiction, dressing up like the characters for every movie premiere.

Cath’s sister has mostly grown away from fandom, but Cath can’t let go. She doesn’t want to.

Now that they’re going to college, Wren has told Cath she doesn’t want to be roommates. Cath is on her own, completely outside of her comfort zone. She’s got a surly roommate with a charming, always-around boyfriend, a fiction-writing professor who thinks fan fiction is the end of the civilized world, a handsome classmate who only wants to talk about words . . . And she can’t stop worrying about her dad, who’s loving and fragile and has never really been alone.

For Cath, the question is: Can she do this?

Can she make it without Wren holding her hand? Is she ready to start living her own life? Writing her own stories?

And does she even want to move on if it means leaving Simon Snow behind?

This one's been getting a ton of hype recently, and I've been seeing it around despite being basically (metaphorically) under a rock (in regards to YA), so definitely curious to check it out. And Eleanor & Park was a NYT Bestseller, so.

It's been a while since a lot of things. Since I've updated this blog (nearly a year!), since I've really had time to read consistently, since I've been as plugged in to the YA blogosphere.

Went for a walk with a friend one night last week, and we stumbled upon a secondhand bookstore. And then I found this gem for only $1! Double Spell by Janet Lunn, first published by Penguin back in 1968. I remembered reading this as a child (which would've been in the late '90s/early 2000s), so it was super exciting to find a copy still in really good condition and for so cheap.

So I think I'm going to try to get back into a pattern of reading frequently, one book at a time. And maybe this blog will see a bit of a revival in the coming days...

So what books from your childhood are you still nostalgic for?deltayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09419573977053468767noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7376470744584275186.post-56582573990241423382012-08-22T09:59:00.002-04:002012-08-22T09:59:02.502-04:00Waiting on Wednesday (42)

There's something very haunting about that cover, don't you think? The contrast between the dark grays and the light blues carries a certain air of allure. And the whole play-on with the title has me interested! Sounds like an interesting paranormal story.
Shift is a worthy follow-up to Shade (review here). The sequel hits just the right tone of continuing the story without too much rehashing of events. A lot of the positive comments I made regarding Shade still apply here - the originality, the charisma, the likeable characters.

Smith-Ready's characters aren't always prim and proper - Aura, Zachary, Logan and the crew get mad. They show emotion. They say harsh things, lash out and act less than perfect at times. And that's what makes them so much more real.

The mystery surrounding the Shift is explored further in this installment, and explored well! Shift has great pacing, an intriguing plot, action, romance... Like Shade, it has a little bit of something for everyone. A great progression for a great YA trilogy.
A little over two years ago, I first blogged about The Vampire Diaries shortly after the first season finale. (I totally called that Tyler/werewolf thing, by the way :P)Well, two seasons later, I'm still watching the show. (It's actually really good, okay?)

So anyway - the fourth season is set to premiere on Thursday, October 11th. A promo was recently released at Comic Con (see video above). By the looks of it, it's definitely going to be an action-packed season. Who else is excited for it?! Any predictions on what's going to happen?

There are a few books/authors whose work I tend to find myself drawn back to, time and again. Books that I'll re-read (although rarely from cover to cover again, mind you), flipping open to any page or to a particularly memorable scene. Sometimes just for fun, sometimes when I'm bored, sometimes when I need a bit of comfort. Does anyone else do that, re-read segments of books?

Off the top of my head, some that are among the more frequently revisited: the Harry Potter series, the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series, Crimson Hero, Little Women, The Hunger Games series...

The photo above was taken earlier this summer at a hostel in London, England. There was a book exchange bookshelf in the lobby, and it was kind of cool to see all the well-traveled books there, left behind by unknown travelers. Browsed through Catching Fire as I charged my phone for a bit - it was a bit surreal, to be engrossed in a familiar book with a very different packaging.

It's been a while, hasn't it? The past couple of months have been insane, from finishing up the semester to exploring a foreign continent. It's been a grand adventure for sure.

Looking back at my Top 10 of 2011 and Top 10 of 2010 posts recently, I realized that, as sad as it sounds, as of right now I haven't read enough books for pleasure this year to do such a post. So - since I'm heading home for a bit of a break soon, I'm hoping to get in some quality reading time.

But looking at all the offerings available, I'm at a bit of a loss - where should I start? What books (recent or classics) should I devour this upcoming month? Which novels have been absolutely standout and really resonated with you? What stories have kept you up into the wee hours of night, unable to leave the fictional world the words created?

Cheers!deltayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09419573977053468767noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7376470744584275186.post-41526842070921928412012-02-05T00:23:00.001-05:002012-02-05T00:23:58.740-05:00In My Mailbox [54]Wow, haven't done one of these posts in over half a year - crazy! So anyway - today was the launch party for The Way We Fall, Megan Crewe's latest release. Unfortunately I was only able to drop by for a little bit, so I missed the reading/speech at the beginning. I did manage to pick up a copy of the book and get it signed though! Megan was very nice, and it was great to meet her in person.

The book cover is very striking, and the texture of it is pretty cool. Megan also brought some really cool swag to the signing, like pens, hand sanitizer and magnets.

A couple years ago, back in 2009 when Megan's debut Give up the Ghost was released, I posted a review & an interview here on Lucid Conspiracy, in case anyone wants to check those out.

What was in your mailbox this week?

*In My Mailbox is a weekly meme hosted by The Story Siren
deltayhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09419573977053468767noreply@blogger.com14tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7376470744584275186.post-53537325689778480592012-01-16T19:42:00.003-05:002012-01-16T19:45:20.876-05:00Giveaway: Cinder
Happy 2012!
