Stephenie Meyer Sued for Plagiarism?!

Just out of curiosity, how many of you guys have seen this news article regarding Stephenie Meyer allegedly having plagiarized Breaking Dawn off of another young author, Jordan Scott? (If anyone else feels like running a quick search, there are numerous other articles about it out there by now.)

Basically, the general gist is that there are "striking" similarities between Breaking Dawn and 21-year-old Jordan Scott's The Nocturne.

Similarities such as "a wedding, a sex-on-the-beach episode and a passage where a human-turned-vampire describes the wrenching change...characters in both books call their wives 'love'"(Today @ MSNBC). And then it goes on about how Scott & lawyer plan to file a copyright infringement lawsuit, but aren't seeking any monetary compensation. Um... okay?

Apparently, the lawyer also says "I think the fans have to read both books and make up their own mind, like a judge is going to have to." Furthermore, this dude has no idea how many copies his client's book (written in her teenage years, published "in book form" in 2006) has sold. Doesn't exactly sound like a good sign...

There was that major episode awhile back where JK Rowling got sued or something for her brilliant Harry Potter series (which kind of ended up being a bust, as I remember). So what do you guys think of this, is it simply more of the same? Trying to capitalize on a bestseller's success, or a legit claim? Weigh in with your opinions!

Oh, I just saw that online too!

On E! online, there was a link to the PDF that compares excerpts from both and... well, there are things that are a little alike, but plagiarism? I don't think so. My guess is that Scott is just getting her 15 minutes.

Oh dear God. I love the line that says that Stephenie had never herd of Jordan Scott's novel before. Well, uh, YEAH. That's the point. Jordan Scott is suing to get publicity for her past, current, and future books. Yeah, one wouldn't need a monetary compensation if her representative says "you have to read both books to compare." It's such a publicity stunt. Way to go, people who are sinking to that level to get attention that they most definitely do not deserve.

The Twilight Saga still remains on the list of my all time favorite books but I'm not going to lie: Those things, they're not exactly original, you know? I mean come on, if you sued someone for every time they put a marriage scene in their book, you'd have to sue yourself because no doubt someone did it before YOU. Same with sex on the beach, etc. This is ridiculous :-p.

I doubt she plagiarized it; but real fans of the series KNOW that Breaking Dawn is written very differently from the first 3 books. Celebsession Blog wrote about this the other day, and how maybe she had a ghostwriter for the last book: www.celebsession.com/2009/08/twilight-series-author-accused-of.html

No, no, no. It's all a hoax. It was debunked months ago.

Problems for Stephenie Meyer! I understand the fans don’t want to accept this, however the facts are the facts.
If this were not true, Jordan Scott and her claim would have been laughed out of court! But it’s not, in fact, it’s growing. I saw a report on TV last night.
If this were not true, why are the fans so upset? Jordan Scott would have been exposed and Stephenie would be smiling :)
If this were not true, Stephenie would have issued a public denial! Where is she? Why is she hiding?.
If this were not true, why would Jordan Scott have put passages out to the world for comparison? You can agree or not, but she obviously is not hiding.
If this were not true, Jordan Scott’s lawyer would not even take the case! By the way, did anybody google her lawyer? He is the guy that took down Napster.
All Breaking Dawn fans better buy copies of the book while you still can. Good luck Steph, you’re gonna need it!

I think Meyer took ideas from Scott just like she did with L.J.Smith.

I believe Meyer took bits and pieces of many books, 1st (I think) is Charlaine Harris, then Smith and so on down the line. If there really ever was one specific "meadow dream" Meyer had, no one could ever prove it. Her children's children will live off the royalties which is a little sickening... but as long as there is a "trickle down" effect to the other authors that she got her ideas from I feel better about it.
